Lead Screening Task Force

Overview

Lead Screening

Lead poisoning is one of the most serious environmental health threats to children in the United States, yet it can be prevented. Most children with elevated blood levels do not show any overt symptoms. Lead screening is a silent problem where solutions depend on proactive efforts for identification. In 1993 the St. Joseph County Lead Screening Task Force was formed to raise the community's consciousness and to advocate for screening at-risk children.

As a vital part of the Task Force, the South Bend Medical Foundation provides children six months to six years of age with a free lead screening. Certificates for the free screening are available at area physician's offices and are honored at all of the South Bend Medical Foundation locations.

For more information on lead poisoning or the St. Joseph County Lead Screening Task Force, contact the Lead Task Force Coordinator at 574-234-8615.
