Directed Blood Donation

Patient Information

Some patients who require transfusion may prefer to participate in the Directed Blood Donation Program. The Central Blood Bank can collect blood from donors recruited by the patient and their family or representatives.

Directed blood donations are a prescription procedure. A physician order must be completed before blood is drawn. Requests will be coordinated by the Central Blood Bank with the patient, physician and hospital.

Directed blood donations are scheduled at the Central Blood Bank. Directed donations are accepted in the seven days prior to scheduled surgery and donors must be drawn at least 72 hours before anticipated transfusion of the patient. Directed blood donations are not collected on an emergency basis.

A directed donor completes the same health screening as a volunteer donor. The basis for acceptance and rejection will be the same as for a volunteer donor.

All potential donors can be typed for ABO and Rh determination. If the donor's type is not a match for the patient, the donor has the option of paying for the typing or donating a unit of blood.

A nonrefundable handling fee will be charged to the patient for each ABO Rh compatible unit collected.

All donors must sign a consent form.
