“What I do every day is important. It’s a profession and a skill and the way my job is performed is important and has a great impact on the test results,” said Sonya. “The ‘blood’ factor is such an important one in our community, our nation, in all areas of life whether it is savings lives, detecting health issues, solving crimes and much more.”
Sonya Phillips
In 1987, Sonya Phillips was pregnant and came to South Bend Medical Foundation for lab work. As a student in nursing school, she was completing her clinical rotations, but was questioning whether or not she should become a nurse.
While at the Foundation, she thought, “this seems like it would be a nice place to work.” Sonya’s family was very important to her and she wasn’t sure if long hours at the hospital was what she wanted to do. After talking to the Dean of Nursing and saying a few prayers about the situation, she decided to take a phlebotomy class and still get her degree. Meanwhile, although her sites were set on starting the next semester with an Accounting class, she decided to fill out an application at SBMF and she’s been here ever since!
“What I do every day is important. Sonya is part of our HouseCall department. This team of employees begins their day at about 4am at our Central Laboratory facility on Lafayette Boulevard in South Bend. They are assigned to various Nursing homes where they draw blood for fasting and non-fasting patients. Once they are finished with these patients, they also visit private homes where patients have been classified as homebound. While the early morning hours may be a challenge for some, the HouseCall staff members are mostly done around noon.
Throughout her employment at South Bend Medical Foundation, Sonya has always felt that the company cares for its employees.
“I think they have tried their best to provide us with the best benefits, retirement planning, a good work environment and a chance to grown in your area of expertise,” said Sonya.
Her advice to those looking for a job at South Bend Medical Foundation is, “take your job seriously, be professional and look at the total picture and see if this is something you want to do!”
