Continuing Education
South Bend Medical Foundation has many forms of Client Education available. We are happy to work with your staff in many critical areas. SBMF will bring these services to your door or your staff will be welcomed at our Central Laboratory to provide this training. Some of the programs that are readily available include:
Phlebotomy Training— A basic overview of venipuncture techniques is offered bi-monthly.
The two-hour refresher course reviews techniques and is perfect for the health care professional who has not used their phlebotomy skills for a long time or someone who may not have phlebotomy experience, but is familiar with other procedures such as IV insertion. A certificate of completion is awarded and, like most of our educational services, this training course is free of charge. We can also focus on other areas of phlebotomy if you prefer, such as capillary punctures, blood culture collection, pediatric and geriatric collection.

Specimen Processing—This course will allow you to more effectively process and package specimens that are sent to SBMF to improve efficiency and decrease errors. Training is also available for the Shipping and Packaging of Dangerous goods and Diagnostic Specimens to comply with the code of Federal Regulations.

In addition to these programs, training can be customized to meet almost every request. Our resources are yours!
Would you like a presentation or lecture given by one of our employees? SBMF is staffed with pathologist, PhD’s and technical staff that are actively practicing and well-versed in many areas of laboratory medicine. They can present on a variety of topics that appeal to a wide range of audiences. Speakers can be scheduled to present at physician meetings, to your laboratory staff, and even your outreach clients. Topics include, but are not limited to:  Obstetrics/Gynecology Testing, Toxicology and Forensic Testing, Billing Issues, Forensic Autopsy, and Marketing and Outreach. The in-service programs serve as a network to provide you and your clients with information on new procedures and methodologies of South Bend Medical Foundation.
South Bend Medical Foundation offers a variety of continuing education opportunities including seminars and teleconferences that encompass a diverse selection of topics on a regular basis. Those of particular interest to clients are programs on technological advances, new methodologies, and procedures, laboratory reviews, safety issues, and new regulations.
Teleconferences are regularly received from the following organizations:

  • American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)
  • College of American Pathology (CAP)
  •  Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA)
  •  South Central Association of Microbiology (SCACM)

Clients are invited to attend these teleconferences and seminars on-site and requested to register attendees with the Education Department. Teleconference materials are available for checkout, when allowed by the teleconference presenters to distribute for post-conference use.

South Bend Medical Foundation would also be glad to be you a tour of our organization because we love visitors! Are you thinking of brining in new instrumentation or expanding a department in your laboratory? If you are and want to meet with department managers and pathologists to see what we’ve learned and benefit from our experience, we would love to have you! Take a comprehensive tour of the South Bend Medical Foundation’s Central Laboratory and let us know which areas are of interest to you. We can tailor your visit to meet your needs and schedule time with SBMF staff that are experienced and well versed in a variety of laboratory disciplines.

 Library Services
Our library services are also an asset to our organization and we encourage use of these resources. The C.A. Pascuzzi Library is one of the largest medical libraries in Indiana, and is open to clients of the South Bend Medical Foundation. The Library’s Ebsco and Ovid online full text databases offer access to full text articles from peer-reviewed journals published by many of the world’s most prestigious medical publishers. An electronic collection of books is also available at the South Bend Medical Foundation Library. The electronic databases offer extensive coverage of the important publications in medicine and complement the extensive print collection that the Library offers. The Library contains hundreds of print and electronic journals with extensive years of coverage. The Library also offers complete inter-library loan service through the National Library of Medicine’s Docline service. Virtually any article is obtainable with the assistance of the library staff. Electronic literature searches and keeping up to date with access to the journals’ electronic table of contents is also available. The Library staff participates in the Indiana Health Sciences Library Association, Medical Library Association and INCOLSA-Indiana Cooperative Library Science Association.

A licensed librarian staffs the SBMF Library part time with a B.A. in History, minor in Museum Studies and a Masters in Library Science. He holds an Indiana State Library Certification and is a member of the American Library Association, Public Library Association, Society of American Archivists and Midwest Archives Conference. For more information, contact our librarian, James Facer at jfacer@sbmf.org or 574-234-4176 ext. 4283.
